At the concert Thursday last week:
Program: Sibelius 5th and after the intermission a new piece for percussion group and orchestra. The intermission was 35 min to set the stage for the 2nd piece.
After Sibelius our principal clarinet got sick. He said "I can't do this no more tonight, call somebody". I had half an hour to go and got the list out. The second on the subing list was a girl who is a former student of Yehuda Gilad's. She didn't have her own instruments at home but she thro herself in a taxi and on a borrowed clarinet, mouthpiece and reed that was handed over to her upon arrival (4 minutes late) she went straight on stage and sight read the new piece and made an heroic contribution to the show.
She was handed many beers after the concert. God bless all excellent free lancers.
Any similar experiences?
Alphie

I've not experienced anything similar, but I think that's the mark of a true professional musician. Lots of people can play the song they like, after practicing it for 4 months, after going through 4 boxes of reeds to find a good one.... but not everybody can grab a borrowed instrument with a foreign set-up and pull off a sigthread performance of a new piece... That kind of versatility is something to aim for!
