 Basset Bb Clarinet?

Is their any reason why they, clarinet manufactures, do not produce a Bb Basset Clarinet? I know they have an A but exactly why do they not make a Bb one?

There was a long discussion about this on the clarinet list last year. There are, I believe, two operas that call for this instrument and that is all. Ricard Morales tried hard to find one, to no avail. So the reason is probably demand.

Several people thought that some of the German opera houses had them.

Wouldn't a b-flat basset clarinet be the same thing as a b-flat bass clarinet?

Not really, because the bass clarinet is still an octave lower. The Bb basse tclarinet would just be a Bb clarinet that goes down to low C (correct me if I'm wrong!). You might be getting it mixed up with the basset horn. The basset horn and the basset clarinet are different things.

While at the moment none of the major manufacturers has bb basset instruments, some instrument makers offer custom extentions on an existing clarinet. Here in Australia, Tony Ward made an such an instrument for the Sydney Opera performances of Tito. In the U.K. Daniel Bangham and Brian Ackerman are both able to supply basset joints.

Actually, the best bass clarinets have a range to low C as well.
