Hello friends,
I have a quick question about my new 2* mouthpiece. Actually it is about a reed to fit it.
(Before anybody says to do so, I already did a search and didn't find the answer I was looking for.)
So, here is my story. I needed a mouthpiece in a hurry (i mean like that day), and the best thing I could find around where I live was a 2*. I like it pretty well, but I think I would like it much better if I had some good reeds. The only reeds they sell around here are Rico-not-so-royals. Just the basic cheap as they come ricos.
The reed tip and the mouthpiece tip match well, but I really am not a fan of these particular reeds. The 2* is a medium-closed hr mouthpiece and the tip measures 1.22 mm. I think the facing length is 17.46 mm. That is all the info I have about the mouthpiece.
A long time ago, I played on Vandoren Blue Box #4 reeds, but have since lost my lip due to a lengthy absence from my beloved Bb friend. And, honestly, I do not even know if those reeds would be "compatible" with a 2*.
Please help! And please don't say anything mean about how you have talked about this a million times because I am pregnant and probably would cry or hurt somebody. My husband says please be nice for his safety.
Thanks,
Hollie

Hollie...
I do not know of the Yamaha 2* mouthpiece, but the measurements you give (1.22mm = .048") indicates a fairly open mouthpiece with a relatively short (17.46mm = .687") facing.
These numbers would indicate using a lighter strength reed. Start with (for example) a Vandoren Blue Box 2 1/2 or Gonzalez FOF 2.75 to see how those match. That would probably be a good beginning point.
Unless you have an iron embouchure, Vandoren Blue Box #4 will be too stiff.
Just as a point of reference, the Vandoren B40 has a tip opening of 1.195mm (.047") and a facing length of 22mm (.866") ...GBK
