I think I'm going to start taking lessons next semester, and my instructor strongly advises me to get an R-13. And since I love her so much and since she is incredibly awesome, I'll take her word for it. [ Requests for instruments / instruments for sale are only posted in the Classifieds, not here. Mark C. ]Yeah, I want to get one, but I am also a broke college student...
Thanks,
Stephanie

Look around for other options, as well.
The R13 is a good, solid instrument, but not the end of the line...
Couesnon Monopole, for one, tunes better than the average R13.

Broke college students don't need loveable, awesome, wonderful teachers adding to their already stressed financial circumstance anxiety, Steph. They have enough to do just to keep up. Synonymous mentions a fine alternative - good advice. After graduation, when the paychecks start stuffing your bank account, buy all the R13s you want

Steph,
As stated truly by Synonymous Botch "look around for other options." You might start by checking with our Sponsor's of the BB who refurbish older wonderful clarinets to give them a second life and help provide students with the best for less. For example try Dave Spiegelthal for some of his listings or others.

It is very difficult for me to understand the "poor college student" mind set when it comes to a college/university level student not having the tools they need to complete their education....(let alone get a job).
I don't know of any professionals using the....Couesnon Monopole clarinet?? That's not to say they aren't. But what do I know. I would listen to the advise of your teacher. Let your teacher help you find the "right" clarinet. I think she's on the right track.
Many ways to pay for the new clarinet....all involve work and a little sacrifice.

I'm a 'broke college student' who needed a new pair of clarinets. I wasn't going to let money get in the way of my education - I needed quality and something that I would use for many years to come. I decided right from the start I wasn't going to skimp on the details. If you're in college and seriously studying music, you need the best to help you play at your best.
I took a massive loan which although I'll be paying off for a LONG time to come, I'll also be improving and playing on a great instrument for a long time.
I'm not saying that this instrument made me better overnight, and I was dissappointed that it didn't at first! But, I've had it almost a month now and I've improved just SO MUCH (HEAPS of practise too!). You need an instrument that will help you grow, and if you just get whatever you can afford, you're not going to do yourself justice.
Rather than spending a little money on something to get you through now, then another instrument after you finish college, why not just get the best you can get now, and pay it all off over time?
