Has anyone listened to Joze Ostranc's CD recording of the Mozart Concerto ? What do you all think of his playing ?

I have a recording of the second movement of the Mozart Concerto performed by Joze Ostranc. He has a beautiful tone, and plays the second movement with expression. Out of all the recordings I've heard, the one performed by Ostranc is one of my favorites.

Yes, this is definitely my favorite Mozart recording! Beautiful and tasteful recording!

I saw this recording in the cheapie CD racks and bought it. Nothing particularly wrong with it, but it just pales in comparison to the Marcellus recording. Ostranc just seems to hurry through some of the more expressive passages and cuts off at the fermatas in the first movement too quickly.

It's been awhile since I've listened to it. I'd have to hear it again to list any other disagreements, but I mainly remember being underwhelmed.g

I've had his recording of the Mozart Concerto for several years; this was my very first clarinet recording! Assuming you have the same recording as I do, I absolutely love the recording of Mozart's bassoon concerto. I would classify it as one of my better versions (I have at least 4 recordings of this piece, maybe 5), though I would rather listen to the Sabine Meyer one any day. Though I haven't listened to it in a long time now...

I have the Joze Ostranc Mozart Concerto and think it's OK but ordinary. It may hold the record for the number of labels it's been issued on. I've seen it on at least 10, all super-low-price.

Best regards.

I'm listening to the first movement now. Man, do they all have a bus to catch or something? Take it easy, slow the pace a bit, play the music and not just the notes.

Maybe the conductor was in a rush to get home before dinner got cold.

Still, better than anything I could do...

Thanks, Ralph G, you're the first one to mention that although one can criticise this recording, I doubt any of us here have sold as many CDs...

Okay, good. I wasn't gonna come right out and say it without other members' comments first. The recording I have is the one with the blue label on the back. It's the Digital Concerto (printed in cursive) CD that also has the Horn and Bassoon Concertos on it.

The first and third movements are definitely rushed, especially the more technical passages. I don't like how the long notes in the second movement are ended so abruptly. I would like to hear the end of long notes tapered off much more gradually. Every long note should end in a decrescendo, giving the second movement more of an adagio quality.

Does that make sense ? I probably couldn't play it any better, though.

I did a search for the name Joze Ostranc and got al kinds of CD's for sale with the Mozart Concerto, but nothing about the life or history of the soloist. This recording is definitely wide spread. I wonder who this clarinetist is, and how this recording got to be so popular.
