 Horst (Los Angeles) Moennig

There's a "Horst (Los Angeles) Moennig" clarinet on eBay at present. It caught my eye because I have an old bassoon with the same logo, and I have wondered how the "Moennig" and Los Angeles" names ever got together on a musical instrument. And I have the usual curiosity about whether my bassoon is worth anything. It needs $'s put into it for sure.
Anyway, I have learned from these archives and from a story by Janet Lein about the Moennig Brothers in the IDRS Journal (vol 22, #2) that one of the Moennigs, Horst, moved to Los Angeles in the 1920's and made instruments. The IDRS article says that Horst, and his brother Hans on the East coast, imported instruments from the remaining family in Germany. Horst died in 1959.

Does anyone know about the 'Horst (Los Angeles) Moennig' instruments? Were there many with this Los Angeles label? Were they student or pro?

Just curious,
Wayne Thompson

Upon further reading, maybe these instruments were made by Horst or, more likely, maybe they were imported from the Moennigs in East Germany in the period after WWII.

About a year ago I renovated a Horst Moennig (Los Angeles but also marked "Made in Germany") bass clarinet which had some very interesting design features --- it was on eBay so I bought it. Turned out to be a rather horrible instrument, lousy intonation and totally unfocused sound in all registers. A beautiful silver-plated interesting piece of junk.
