 any Rostaing fans here?

Hi all,

New to the board here, and fairly new to clarinet as well, coming to it after years on some other instruments...anyhoo, was wondering if there are any other fans of this wonderful French player who played with Django, or any others of this style...and, is there anyone playing this style today? I know there are alot of current Django-philes on guitar, but do any of these guys have clarinet players with them?

thanks!

I love him -- my third favorite after 1. Barney Bigard and 2. Ed Hall. A lot of Django style music is being performed here in Paris, but I never came across anyone quite like Rostaing.

hi beejay,

Yeah, what I like most about him, is his clean, woody tone...I kind of describe it as a 'dreamy' or even 'surreal'. Especially on the slower numbers. I have a few recordings from early 40's...one has Rostaing and another cl player...the other guy has more of a 'dirty' New Orleans sound...nothing against that, but I much prefer the Rostaing tone.

I also have a cassette of Django that was recorded by someone. I do not know which recording it is, but it has the most beatiful version of 'Brazil' on it...I assume it is Rostaing, as the tone is the same, but I have never seen a CD for sale with that number...do you know which it is?

Also, do you have any web links for the current guys in Paris you mentioned?

Thanks and best to you,
doug

Guess you and me are the only members of the Hubert Rostaing appreciation society. I can't think of anything to send you right now, but let's keep in touch.

No. Another member. Anybody that can play Night and Day in G is a genius. He had tough shoes to fill. Django and Grapelli were separated during WWII and Rostaing filled the bill. If only some legit players would listen to the naturalness of this guys playing. He just oozes sound.
