I am a band director at a small school in rural Ohio. I just aquired an Evette-Schaeffer Buffet ("Master-Model") clarinet that looks to be in pretty decent shape. I would like to know a little more about this clarinet. I really don't care about its value, but would like to know a little more about this instrument. I have looked in a lot of places and talked to a few people that tell me that there is no known serial number lists for the E-S clarinets. The number on it is K44xx. Does anyone know how old this clarinet is or know someone who might know? Is it a pro or intermediate model? Are they pretty good instruments? Any information anyone could give would be most beneficial!

The Buffet website returns this as a 1952 build date.
If you do a search in this forum (up the top of your post) "Master Model",
you'll get boodles of info. Buffet equates them to the current E-13.
If the wood is unchecked or chipped, and the keys still move then it may be worth an overhaul. The truth is that this is an older design and some improvements have been made in the interim.
I like the low notes on these Master Models, but found them stuffy.

Michael - SB's info is very good, I had a [regular model ] ES briefly , quite a good "intermediate" cl. I believe the Master was the best of these Buffet clones. The Buffet's from about 1955 had the improved [modified, polycylindrical?] bore giving better tuning of the 12ths [clarion register], doubt the ES's did until later. Our archives have more info available. As SB said, if in at least fair shape now, its well worth having a "playing-condition" repair done. Re: stuffiness, have your tech "open-up" the lower pads, it may help. Don

Please pardon me if I sound a little ignorant, I am a (pretty good) trumpet player that can play enough clarinet to get me by in the classroom. You say that these E-S horns are "clones." Does this mean they are not really Buffets? Also, the horn is in need of an overhaul. The wood is in really good shape - no chips, cracks, or other imperfections. I know that it needs soaked in some bore oil (so I'm told) and everything removed, cleaned, and re-padded. I also need a rod and adjustment screw for the Ab key. I plan on doing what I can myself (corks, pads, soaking, cleaning) and sending it to a tech to do the things I can't (key adjustments, etc.). I appreciate all of your patience and information. This seems to be a place that I can return to often in order to gain a little more knowledge on clarinets. Kudos goes out to this website, and in particular this message board! You guys have a really good thing going on here!!!
