 jazz in philadelphia
Author: ned

I'll be in Philly on the 2nd and 3rd of Jan/04, visiting from Australia, and was wondering where I could go or whom I could contact with regard to listening to some real NO jazz. Can anyone offer me some advice? I have looked quite thoroughly at a number of jazz websites, but Philadelphia seems to be "jazz free" - I'm sure this is not the case though.

Thanks,

JK

There IS jazz in Philly.
Esp. in area just west of Univ of PA
Suggest you go to South Street and pick up copy of local paper that tells about events and "cabaret" life.
Keep in mind that in Philly, all clarinet jazz is done with #5+ reeds on a closed tip mouthpiece and without vibrato. (just kidding.....an historical reference, see the doctoral thesis about the phila school of clarinet playing in the archives)

Go to Chicago, it's just a short trip west of Philly. Hey, they moved the Liberty Bell , just in case you were looking for it. (egad, why would anyone go to Philly except for a Philly cheese..)

Thanks all you folks for the info and particularly Alseq for the clubs. Seen the Liberty Bell, it was practically outside the door of our company head office. I have actually been to P a couple of times, but always for work and never time enough to "get down". As well I understand that the local art gallery has a very good collection of Flemish art - so does Chicago - that's on the list to visit in another year or so.

There are often performances at the convention center, performance hall downtown. The venue has VERY good acoustics.

Nearby, the hidden gem of Philadelphia cuisine,

Rangoon Burmese restaurant on 112 North 9th street.

(PS - It ain't all Cheesesteaks and carriage rides.)

And Bob, last time I checked Chicago was 750 miles away...

There may be events of note at Atlantic City, New Jersey much nearer.

There is excellent Jazz in Pittsburgh also...a scant 350 miles from Philly
James St. Tavern
Manchester guildhall
Several bistros on the south side on or near Carson St.
Bars in the Hill district.

and of course the Primanti Bros. sandwich....Picksburghs answer to the hoagie, unless your taste runs to Le Bec Fin.
enjoy

As Paul Hindemith once quoted

"Pittsburgh is a fine old city, Pittsburgh" (I might be mis-quoting here as my football knowledge is almost in the negative territory)

He used it very effectively in the last movement of the Pittsburgh Symphony (a great work).

Thank you Mr S Botch for the address of the Burmese restaurant. Funny thing about most of the jazz players and officianados I know - they like real hot curry - I'm not talking about the weak supermarket variety either.

There's likely not much in Atlantic City after New Years Day in terms of headliners, but there's usually something in the casino lounges. I'll try to remember to email you anything I think would be of interest in A.C. as the date gets closer. (I live outside of Atlantic City.)

By the way, the BEST cheese steaks are at the "White House" in Atlantic City where they use 2 secret ingrediants, steak and provolone! And in AC they are called submarine sandwiches, not Hogies.

So.....750 miles is nothing when you're from Australia.....
