 Selmer Series 9 Question
Author: Darrel
Date:   1999-11-11 04:22

To one and all,

I have a burning question about the Selmer Series 9 clarinet. I have tried to find out, on some of the series, there is a STAR EMBLEM on the front of the upper joint. Is there any significance to this marking? Is there any history to accompany this clarinet?

Thanks for the information.

Yes, the star is quite significant as it signifies Selmer's market entry with a polycylindrical bore. This was in response to Buffet's "polycylinrical" design introduced some years earlier. The 9* is polycylindrical, the 9 is Selmer's last model with the large bore/unfraised tone hole design they championed throughtout the second quarter of the 20th century.

How does your 9 STAR play? I used my Series 9 (no star) in community orchestra last night. It's a great, very smooth horn.

I have a Selmer 10SII star.
What does the star mean?
Is this model the final one as 10S series?
It has a narrower bore and produces a nice dark tone.
I bought it 3 years ago in Japan while using Festival. Now I have transplanted "RECITAL"'s barrel on 10SII star and enjoy the horn and Festival as well.

IT MEANS NOTHING , JUST A DESIGN, AND UNFORTUNATELY THAT WAS ONE OF THE WORST CLARINETS EVER MADE.. I WAS STUCK WITH ONE IN COLLEGE BACK IN THE MID 70'S... MAKE A LAMP OF IT I DID... GET A SELMER 10G,, OR BUFFET R13...

Keith - if you read a little further, you'll discover that the star _does_ mean something.
