This is probably going to sound like a stupid question, but there has been some confusion with a music retailer, and I am thoroughly confused.
The Finzi Concerto... what key is it in, and what clarinet is it written for?

I was right, and the music shop was wrong, but I suppose it wasn't their fault if their computer told them the wrong key.

I performed it with a very small string group (2 on each part, except viola and bass) about 2 years ago. I probably didn't play it very well, but it's quite challenging, and one of my most memorable experiences.
I love all of Finzi's works; particularly A Severn Rhapsody. It's one of my ambitions to get together a concert all of Finzi works, and say a bit about him, his life, what he was all about, and just to have people enjoy and appreciate the beauty of his music.

Thank you all again for your replies. I bought the concerto yesterday, i've only sight-read it yet; I will do some proper work on it later today.
Does anyone have any tips on how to play it well?
Also, if anyone could recommend a good recording of it I would be very grateful.

Playing the Finzi well.....well, it's kind of like Brahms in that there are very long phrases that you have to be able to support all the way through. It forces you to work on your breathing.
I played the Finzi for NYSSMA when I was in 10th grade. My judge said that I was the first person he'd ever heard play it at a solo festival.

Being forced to work on my breathing can only help- half the problems with my playing are caused by not breathing properly.

The recording by NAXOS is great, really great. The clarinettist is Robert Plane, and you have this marvellous selection of works: the concerto, the Fve Bagetelles, A Severn Rhapsody, Three Soliloquies (sp?) and some other pieces. Gorgeous music, gorgeous clarinet-playing.
