What's the best collection of Verdi orchestral excerpts? I've got the Giampieri/Riccordi, but it's not complete. I also have Vol. 6 of Standard Repertoire Library/Bellwin Mills - are there more Verdi excerpts in Vol. 5 or 7? Is it still in print?
Where would one find some of the lesser known, but fantastic, clarinet solos from the overtures (eg: Luisa Miller, Il Corsaro, etc)?

Verdi are nice - and often require a C clarinet (or copious tedious transposing). If you're thinking about life in an opera pit a C clarinet is almost a necessity.
If you want a real challenge, try any of the Richard Strauss clarinet experts

Two great resources are available from Gary van Cott's catalog:
Index of Orchestral and Operatic Excerpts for Clarinet compiled by Melvin Warner. Moonlight Press, SS, 36 pages. Lists by composer and work the location of passages in 16 generally available excerpt books.
The Opera Clarinetist, by Ben Armato, 104 pages. A collection of excerpts from the most popular operas in the repertoire by the Ben Armato, clarinetist for the Metropolitan Opera for over 35 years. It includes 23 operas from 13 composers such as Bizet: Carmen, Donizetti: Lucia di Lammermoor, Mozart: Don Giovonni, Puccini: Tosca, Verdi: Aida, etc. The second clarinet part is also included in a number of excerpts.
Best regards.

Ken ... as a student clarinetist my (then) teacher used to play principal in the opera orchestra here (Margorie Smith-often wonder what happend to her) ... sometimes at the end of my lesson she'd put one of her opera clarinet parts on the music stand and we'd play duets - very entertaining learning, indeed.
