 Airstream...Children vs Adults
Author: Dan Shusta

Would children have an advantage in playing the clarinet because of a possibly more defined, narrower, airstream produced by a smaller throat and oral cavity?

Even with a weaker embrochure, perhaps the narrower airstream is an advantage for them.

And if this is true, would this have any implications for an adult beginner? Would the adult have to exercise more conscious thought on producing a narrow airstream?

Anyway...it's just a thought.

Any comments would be appreciated.

The smaller nasal/ sinus cavities would be a disadvantage in tone production. The smaller chest cavity and lung capacity would also be a disadvantage as would general physical strength and endurance. You very seldom find child prodigies on wind and brass, they do crop up but not often, compared to strings and piano. The voice is a different story because the characteristics of the child voice and adult voice are equally prized for their different qualities.
