Hello all. I know within the last few years that has been some serious confusion about the faculty changes here at DePaul University. I hope now that the general public understands these changes and should also know that they have been for the better. The change to the faculty here at the DePaul Clarinet Studio is the addition of the young but very gifted Wagner Campos. Julie DeRoche, Larry Combs, and John Yeh are still here teaching and teaching well.
Now on to the heart of this topic. Last monday, October Sixth, Professors DeRoche, Combs and Campos appeared in a recital. It was amazing if only more prospective students could have been there to witness it. Each clarinetist demostrated an amazing amount of virtuosity and musical genius in their performance. What strikes me is that these three are great performers, but also great teachers in that they push their students and tell them how to play in the style that they do. And from my experience....it is certainly working.
Now, the concert.
DIVERTIMENTO "don Giovanni"
An excellent arrangement of mozart tunes performend by our three profesors as a clarinet trio (three Bflat). Excellent blend of style and clolour.
Star-Fall Dances
The most innovative piece for clarinet i have ever seen. Performed by my instructor Julie DeRoche and on marimba Fred Selvaggio. Brilliant colour was established in this twentieth century piece, and excellent blend between clarinet and marimba. Mrs. DeRoche used very interesting aspects of the clarinet, such as quarter-tone shading on certain notes and all around very accurate technique in some seeminly difficult passages. The Marimba part looked very difficult as it required the facilitation of four mallets accross the keyboard to accommadate so much colour. It was so wonderful hearding such virtuosity and musical intellect in my teacher that I had not experienced as much before.
Forms of Flight for solo Clarinet by George Flynn
This piece of music was based on the very different forms of aviation in our world, from birds, to aeroplanes. But to be honest, it was not what I was thinking about when Mr. Larry Combs played this piece.It was how this man can have so much control of his air. To use precise flutter tonguing, vivavious groupings of notes that do not lose their focus, and double high c's that are resonant, powerful and in tune. Throughout the piece my jaw was dropped to the floor in how a man who was so helpful scientificly in the classroom could have so much passion with his air.
Bagatelles for 2 Clarinets
It was this piece that Julie and Larry displayed their great similarities in their ease of blend, and ensemble. It was magnificent!
Three Pieces for Solo Clarinet by Blas Atehortua
The time had come for Wagner Campos to prove himself. The man has an excellent recording out and I had already known him to be an excellent musician. When he put his clarinet to his mouth, I could tell there was a little difference in playing style between him, Larry, and Julie, however! that difference was small. This piece demanded a lot of attention from the artist, in that it changed registers of the clarinet very quickly. Wagner made his transitions seem so fluid and liquid i was convinced his upper lip was made of steel. If anyone had heard this man play, all the doubts that people have been making about depaul would have disappeared.
Challenging Etudes for Brilliant Clarinetists by Max Raimi (world premier)
The trio assmebled again to conclude the concert with a brilliant display of their technical facilty, intimate interaction with one another, and excellent blend.
Congratulations to the Clarinet faculty of depaul university for being amazing teachers/coaches and brillant virtuosi at the same time. It makes me look forward to my future as a clarinetist.
I hope all young aspiring clarinet majors give DePaul a look, it is certainly worth it as it has done so much for me in so little time. My 5 weeks here have been the happiest in my life.
