 buffet clarinte and vandoren mouthpiece

hi, i'd like to know what is the facing of the B45 for Bb clarinet and for bass clarinet. i tried the vandoren webiste and they only say medium/long. i would like to know in numbers (mm).
also i'd lke to ask if the R-13 or RC models by buffet has the metal tenons like the prestige models. are they important? here because of the weather clarinets are likely to crack so i think they are important and i don't want to spend twice the money for the prestige model now.
also i'd like to know if it's true that the RC model has the articulated G#/C# key, and i'd like to know what are the differences between the RC and the R-13 models in general.
thanks a lot.

Ok, I checked the WW&BW printed catalog and they have a chart with the facings of numerous mouthpieces. The B-45 is 44 for Bb Soprano clarinet and 76 for Bb Bass Clarinet.

I know that the R-13 from 3-4 years ago doesn't have metal tenons. Don't know if that is a recent change on newer models. You might have a look at the Buffet website. If it doesn't show or tell the information you want, there is most likey a way to e-mail them directly from there.

My two-year-old R13 doesn't have metal tenons. AFAIK, that's a Prestige feature.

Those numbers are meaningless without an explanation.

The chart in the WW/BW is an approximation and should not be taken too literally. If you are going to use those numbers they should be qualified as to what they mean (millimeters or inches).

More specifically, the B45 clarinet mouthpiece has a tip opening of 1.19mm (.046") with a facing length of 22mm (.866").

The B45 bass clarinet mouthpiece has a tip opening of 1.93mm (.075") with a facing length of 30mm (1.181").

As machine made/hand finished mouthpieces have a certain degree of inconsistancy, the above specs may slightly vary...GBK

I don't think they really ever put metal tenons on R13s. Prestige and RC Prestige do have metal tenon caps. Regular RCs don't have metal tenon caps. I think all Selmer professional models have metal tenons, tho.

I'm pretty sure that RCs don't have the articulated C#/G#, but I have seen older models that do. Does anyone know why they don't do articulated C#/G# as much anymore? hehe, but you can get the optional low Eb for it. :)

My personal opinion about the mouthpieces: try them yourself. The numbers don't mean anything to you unless you know what is good for you. I played on a B45 for 4 years and had problems with articulation. Last year I tried an M13Lyre and my sound got so much better! For my bass clarinet, I used an older C* refaced with a D facing (I believe). I almost suggest looking at Selmer's mouthpieces for bass. But it al depends on what works for you, like I said. Go to a music store and say you wana try everything they have! lol

Good luck

i think maybe i should have explained why i needed those measurements.
thanks for the facings of those mouthpieces GBK, i figured that the numbers eebaum wrote are the tip openings in inches because i knew the tip openings in mm before just not the facing. i won't buy a B45 mouthpiece, i have them both for bass clarinet anbd for Bb clarinet. i just needed them to compare. i'm going to send a VERY VERY VERY closed pomarico mouthpiece to dave speigelthal to reface, and i wanted to compare my favorite Bb clarinet pomarico mouthpiece to the Bb B45 mouthpiece, so i can know the same for the bass clarinet.

about the RC, i understand that it has the articulated key, at least it says that on the website (but it could be wrong).
i'd still lke to know what is the difference between RC and R-13 (i don't care and the mechanical differences, just what you hear or feel when you play).
also maybe someone knows why in europe the RC model is so popular and in the USA the R-13 is more popular. i will probably buy my clarinet in wurope so the RC model will be MUCH cheaper. that is why i think i will get it.
also, are the metal tenon rings really important? is it worth the price of the prestige? (i might get a greenline model anyway so i hope not to worry about cracks).
thank you.

Hello, I'm from Italy where RC and RC prestige are the most diffuse clarinet.
In the past I' ve played two models of RC. One with standard keys and Eb levier
(model number 1113L ), the other with 19 keys and 7 rings and articulated G# (model number 1179).
But I' ve frequently seen a model of RC prestige with G# articulated Eb levier without 7 ring (model 1147).
You can see a picture here:
http://gianlucacampagnolo.interfree.it/
Standard RC does not have metal tenon RC prestige yes.
Rc have a bore 1mm bigger than r13 and maybe other difference but i don't know.
In Italy RC and R13 cost same.
A personal note I've sell my 2 RC to buy a leblanc ambiance, between RC an R13 I prefer R13 and festival, in near future maybe tosca.
excuse me for my bad english
Andrea

I've played on both the RC and the R13. Historically the R13 came first with its smaller (compared to instruments of the time) bore. The bore was described by its designer Robert Caree as polycylindrical. From a long explaination I once read this means the bore has essentially three parts(see Gibson "Clarinet Acoustics"p37).

The RC has a similar bore ie "polycylindrical" but slighly larger.

I found the R13 had a very focussed, compact sound. The RC has a sound that is "spread". Intonation is for me slight better on the RC. Though it is more suited to playing at A=442 in warm conditions. I miss the legato I could get on my old R13. The RC is a bit more work in this regard(for me).

Americans seem to like the focussed compact sound. Perhaps due to the influence of Bonade (his old buffets apparently had a smallbore like the R13) and Marcellus. Maybe the sound reflects an aspect of the nations psyche. Very to the point people, efficient, buisness like.

Chris
