Hello All,
I am here in Baghdad, Iraq playing clarinet in over 130 degrees but is getting cooler now. We have a problem with a few almost brand new R13 Prestiage Buffet's that will not go completly together anymore. Can this problem be solved by repair or is it just too late for them to return to normal. Both the barrel and center will not go into place. Is there any help for when we return back to Germany in 2004?
Thanks,Miles

If the problem is swelling of the cork, sandpaper can fix the problem quickly.
However, if, as I suspect, the problem is wood binding on wood, I've found that the usual cause is shrinkage at the bottom of the sockets rather than expansion of the end of the tenon, although others disagree. At any rate, you need to fix it before using the instrument, since this is a prime cause of cracking.
At 130 degrees, any wood can swell. Your address says you're in a military band. Why not put your good mouthpiece on the Bundy you use for parades. Alternatively, ship the instruments back to Germany and have them fixed, although I'd be hesitant to risk any pro-model horn in that kind of heat.
And please tell us more about music-making in Iraq.
Best regards.
