Barry -

I tried it and bought it, despite the high price. When it's properly adjusted, it's better than everything else I've played. This involves tiny adjustments to the top and bottom screws, and at the beginning it takes a LOT of fussing and experimenting. Also, the screws need to be quite tight and have small heads with sharp edges. You kill your fingers getting it set.

It's best to try it at a workshop display with Oleg himself showing you how to set it up.

That was my impression too. I spent an afternoon in the store trying out ligatures -- Lyuben, Vandoren Optimum, and the entire BG range, including the pricy gold-plated one. I thought the Oleg was better than any of the above -- much easier to blow on my Vandoren B45, and it helps produce a much larger dynamic range (soft to loud) than my old Rovner. But you are right in saying it takes a lot of fiddling to get just right. When it is properly adjusted, though, it is superb.
