 Grad schools

I just left this question on the clarinet teachers/performers topic, but thought it might deserve a forum of it's own. I am currently looking at grad schools to pursue a Master's in clarinet performance and wondering if anyone who's been through this process before has any suggestions. Who to study with? Where to study? Appropriate audition material? I am feeling overwhelmed.
Has anyone studied with Else Ludewig-Vehrdher? I have heard recordings of the Vehrdehr Trio and of her reputation, but Michigan State?
Thanks, Kate

Michigan State has a reputation as a "party school", at least in the undergrad levels, deservedly or undeservedly.

Elsa has a sterling reputation with her students.

For grad schools, I would also check out U of M. and if you are sticking in Michigan, Eastern Michigan is good too. Dr. Kim Cole is a good teacher; Deborah Chodacki of U of M... i have heard she is great! Good LUCK!

U of M has Fred Ormand as the head of the clarinet dept.

University of Wisconsin, Prof. Linda Bartley, is a good clarinetist and a great teacher. She could use more motivated and talented students to work with.

Russ Dagon at Northwestern is great. U of M and Michigan State are both great too- Elsa and Chodaki and Fred Ormand.
Shop around- make sure they have a reputation as a good teacher, but from experience i can tell you- MAKE SURE YOU CLICK WITH THEM PERSONALLY or it will be harder to absorb any information, good or not.

Considering all the clarinet teachers we haven't met (and are dead) that's a broad statement. I always love the "great people/discoveries/etc. of the millenium" stuff going on; the list is crowded with people from this and the last century - because we know more about them. Greatness tends to diminish with time ...
