Hey. I'm starting a clarinet quartet with some of my friends (we have a bass and could probably access an Eb if necessary - we might be able to find an alto, but all my experience with that have been purely evil, so I'd like avoid that if possible).
I'm not that familiar with the repertoire for clarinet quartets. A few pieces I know personally are:
French Suite, Desportes
Emperor Variations, Haydn
I also have a clarinet quartet CD (clarinet masquerade - a really good CD, btw) with some promising songs.
For anyone in a clarinet quartet, what are some good songs that I might consider (that I would never otherwise know about!). Any difficulty (preferrably towards the more challenging end - similar to French Suite, for those who know it) will be great. Thanks

The only alto clarinet that I might be able to get accessed to is a piece of junk. It sounds horrible, plays out of tune, and speaks constantly, so I'd be reluctant to use it in music.
I'm not commenting on the quality of alto clarinets in general. I'm sure there are good ones out there, but I don't have access to those unfortunately!

the Alfred Uhl quartet is very cool. It is for 3 B flats and Bass.

The James Waterson quartets are some of the best quartets published, they are standards. You can use either a 4th clarinet or bass; we've done both,and personally, I prefer the bass but that's IMO. He also published 2-3 trios, I forget exactly how many.
There are plenty of Qs out there......
Suite for Four Equal Clarinets - Stewart Smith
Simple Gifts - arr. Villanueva
Bill Holcombe's arrangements - there are TONS of them - Reverie and Golliwog's Cakewalk come to mind. You can actually hear Golliwog by my clarinet choir (I had a bass double the 4th part) at www.chesco.com/~thomas/rehearsals.html He writes fun jazz arrangements, too.
Ron Dishinger writes a lot of quartet arrangements, but they can be top heavy (beware the Vivaldi, with boring filler on the bottom parts) but there are a few that are really nice. A Winter's Willow by Vaughn Williams is good. He also has some English Madrigals I like.
