Looks like the merger talks between the Philharmonic and Carnegie Hall are over, and this apparently means the orchestra will remain at Lincoln Center. NY Times article is at http://www.nytimes.com/2003/10/08/arts/music/08PHIL.html for anyone who wants to read it.
They're gonna sink $250 million into renovating Avery Fisher Hall? That's a lotta do-re-mi, even in NYC. Did it cost that much (in inflation-adjusted dollars) to build it in the first place?

I'm inclined to discount stories involving personalities and agree with Robert Harth, the Carnegie Hall Artistic and Executive Director. He said that when they tried to put together a calendar, they found that they would need 18 months each year to fit in the existing Carnegie Hall and the Philharmonic concerts.
It would be great for the Philharmonic to play in Carnegie Hall. Maybe they can fit in a few concerts each hear, but given the lawyers (I'm one) and the practicalities, it may not be possible.

Personally I'm happy that the NY Phil is not moving to Carnegie Hall. I was concerned that the NY Phil would monopolize all the performance and rehersal time. Then we would no longer hear the other fine symphonies of the world play at Carnegie Hall. I much prefer to hear a variety of world class orchestras that come to play in a world class hall.

I heard the NY Phil when they toured here (Sydney) YEARS ago (Bernstein was at the helm) - in the 70s. They're a fine orchestra, I remember they played Mahler 5 - it was awesome.

I think the merger always looked rather unlikely. It would undoubtedly have been a good thing for the Philharmonic; unfortunately drastic change is difficult with so many forceful personalities.
I'm still forgetting that Philly's my "home" orchestra now, not New York. Geographically, at least.
