Appropos of nothing, I was watching the Eiger Sanction the other night. Clint knocked the feathers out of the bad guy. As he was walking away, Clint turned and said "Guess you won't be playing your clarinet for awhile." That was almost better than "Make my day."

For anyone "out there" that may not be aware, Clint Eastwood is a musician in real life playing fairly competent jazz piano. His love and expertise of music is evident in great music he selects for the soundtracks of his films and, as a result, his image is featured on this months "International Musician", the official newpaper of the American Federation of Musicians.

The man IS a jazz enthusiast and (I think) plays respectable jazz piano, although all the hardcore pianists I work with brand him a noodler. It is an established fact Mr. Eastwood has been intimately involved his entire career in all aspects of the soundtracks to his motion pictures. His 1978 picture, “The Gauntlet” (with Sondra Locke) is a classic example with solo appearances by Bill Watrous and John Faddis (opening theme and credits). Also, in the film he portrays an over-the-hill Secret Service agent, "In the Line of Fire", Mr. Eastwood is playing the piano himself in all bar scenes. v/r ken

We should also be grateful to Mr. Eastwood for having produced some excellent jazz albums -- one of which I have, by Pete Christlieb and Warne Marsh on tenor saxes, called "Apogee" --- plus he produced the movie "Bird" about Charlie Parker. He's a true jazz fan who puts his money where his heart is.
