Hi All:
I'm looking for any interesting Basset Horn pieces.
Is there anything out there that you've played or heard of any interest?
It can be a solo or ensemble piece, or an orchestral or band piece that includes the Basset Horn.
I know this query may prompt some humor, but I would appreciate more serious responses.
Thanks for your help.

There is a quintet movement by Mozart for C clarinet, basset horn and strings- beautiful!
Also a trio by Backofen for basset horn, harp and cello. Less musically interesting than the Mozart, but interesting enough because of the unusual combination of instruments.
I'm sure you know about the Mendelssohn Concert Pieces.

John,
Why should anyone laugh? It is the most sublime of instruments.
Here are some I like:
Carl Stamitz: Bassethorn concerto in F. Amadeus Verlag. Winterthur, Switzerland.
John Mahon: Four concert dues for two basset horns. Musikverlag Gottfried Aegler, CH-3762 , Switzerland.
Heinrich Backofen: Concerto in F for basset horn and orchestra.
Anton Stadler. Terzetten for three basset horns or a combination of clarinets and basset horn.
Mozart. 12 duets for two basset horns K487. Breitkopf. This adapts beautifully to clarinet and basset horn.
Mozart's five divertimenti for three basset horns. This exists in a version for three clarinets by OUP. It is relatively easy to drop the third clarinet part a fifth and play it with basset horn and two clarinets.
I've adapted Beethoven's trio opus 87 (available on this site) two clarinets and basset horn by using Finale to drop the third clarinet a fifth. It works extremely well.
Mozart. Notturni for choir and basset horn.
Mendelssohn. Two concert pieces for clarinet and basset horn.
Mendelssohn. Songs without words. Version for basset horn and piano by Georgina Dobree.
Carl Maria con Weber, Larghetto, Allegro and Allegretto on Mozart's Clemenza di Tito for wind band including beautiful basset horn part. Musica Rara. Wertheim.
If you like modern music, Karlheinz Stockhausen has written a lot of music for the basset horn. There are also a couple of fine orchestral pieces by Richard Strauss.
You can obtain an excellent repertoire from John P. Newhill, 25 Amberly Road, Sale, Chesire M33 6QP) You can find him on the Internet if you search for Rosehill publications, which puts out some interesting music.
Remember, anything you can play on the clarinet you can also play on the basset horn, if in the wrong key. The Mozart clarinet concerto, of which an earlier fragment for basset horn in G still exists (on the music section of this site, I believe) is particularly well adapted.
Finally, you should look at music written for other instruments in F, notably
the Cor Anglais and the French horn. Mozart's four horn concerti are particularly felicitous on the basset horn.
Good hunting. Let me know if you find anything interesting.

What a fine listing, Beejay, TKS, will copy off this thread. I think of playing some of these on my psuedo-basset, [Selmer alto], even tho it may lack the tone-color, it only lacks the B's low C, of course that is prob. featured!! Comments? Don
Thanx, Mark, Don

Backofen's Quintet for Basset Horn and Strings (op.9) is one of the major chamber works for Basset Horn. Heinrich Backofen was a basset horn player who also wrote the first basset horn method book.
Two other basset horn chamber works which you may wish to check are the Quartuor for Basset Horn and String Trio by Janos Fusz, and the Quartetto for Basset Horn and String Trio by Jirí Druzecký.
Druzecký was Czech and Fusz was Hungarian. (both composers coincidently died in the same year - 1819).
Both works are standard Classical era fare, but important early basset horn historical pieces...GBK

In the attachment you'll find a list of music for Basset Horn from a collection in Karlstad, Sweden. Some of the pieces are published and some are not.
The collection is called: "Löwenhielmska samlingen" (The Loewenhielm collection) and is kept in the Town Library at Karlstad, Sweden.
For more information about the contents, e-mail to the library itself.

"Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind", by Osvaldo Golijov, for clarinet & string quartet, has a section for Basset horn, as well as the rest of your arsenal (Bb, A, Eb, Bass).

Stamiz wrote a basset horn concerto? (but I could be wrong - must check Groves').
GBK - when did the basset first emerge?
Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

diz...The general consensus is that the basset horn dates from about 1760 and an instrument maker named Mayrhofer...GBK

Ask Al Rice! The celebrated rectangular B H by Eisenmenger [1698-1742] is described in my [old] "2500 Hist Mus Insts", a newer edition is available, prob via several "Early Cl" posters. Its organized by maker and museum, it'd take a while to look all thru it. Will [suggest] look in Rendall. Don

Diz,
The wording on the manuscript copy in the University Library of Muenster of the "Basset horn concerto" by Carl Stamitz reads: "Concerto in C/Corno Bassetto principale/ due violini, due oboi/due corni in C/due violi et basso del Sig. Carl Stamitz." The solo part was written, as was Mozart's Winterthur Fragment, for an instrument in G which means that the orchestral part in the modern version has been transposed from C major to to B-flat major.
