 Conn 16 bore specs
Author: Dan Shusta

Can anyone tell me where to find bore specs for Conn instruments?

I understand Kenny Davern switched from a Conn 424 to a Conn 16 which is a composite clarinet because of his move to New Mexico.

Thanks.

No, but try IMS, Conns ?successor?. I'm not all that familiar with many of the early Conns, the Natl Music Museum [Shrine] might help. SOME prob. were big bores, doubt more than 15.0 mm [.590 "] like some B&H's! Others, Help! Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

To Don Berger,

" SOME prob. were big bores, doubt more than 15.0 mm [.590 "] like some B&H's! Others, Help! Don"

I wonder if [sorry to change topic] you could help me with particulars regarding bore sizes? What would be classified as a small bore? What would be classified as large bore? Is there some sort of arbitrary measurement?

I have a couple of oldies, Albert and simple system. A colleague of mine swears by large bore as being better - for various reasons. I want to measure mine to compare, and I see that you mention 15.0mm = .590 in. [ie ] big bore.

Just so I can get a hold of the basics, I notice on a website, a dealer has advertised an instrument as being " a fairly standardised 14.7 mm bore". He was referring to the German system, which is similar to Albert of course, and I presume you were referring to Boehm. Or is a bore just a bore regardless of system?

Hope I'm not a bore for asking,

Thanks,

JK

Hi John K - Just now re-read this thread, saw your ? . Its an interesting subject, my general conclusion is , "we dont know much". In Lawson's "Clarinet" [PB] pg 29 there is a list of bore sizes and "bore-characters" over the years, with some discussion, likewise for Brymer, I believe, Rendall, also, perhaps. Its prob. much too easy to associate "small" bores 14.6/7 [mm][Buffet?] with classical cls, 14.7/9 intermediate, and 15.0 +[LeB/Sel/ B&H?] as "large" jazz/high volume cls. IMHO, so much depends on mp/reed/player, our methods of describing "tonality" are nearly meaningless. The cls I NOW prefer are a LeB L7 , about 14.85 and Sel CT 15.0, I believe I sound the same on each. The diff. is mighty small! Please, other students of this momentous question, chime in, No, I'm not "bored" with it. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don
