 Upgrading To A Wood Clarinet
Author: jpb1172

Hello.

I have recently started playing the clarinet again after quitting about 12 years ago. I started in fifth grade and quit in the tenth grade. I played on and off in a community band after that but eventually quit. I have a Vito plastic student clarinet, and I'm thinking of purchasing my first wood clarinet.

When I was a serious student, my parents considered buying me a Buffet R13. I'm now playing for fun in a community concert band, and I was thinking of buying an intermediate model, such as a Buffet E11 or a Noblet clarinet. Does anyone have any recommendations? I've considered buying a clarinet from one of the music stores on the Web, because the prices are so much better. I'm not sure if that's a good idea, because I won't have the ability to test more than one clarinet for comparison. Would it be better to try to find a used Buffet R13 instead of purchasing a new intermediate model?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

consider a used one. there are great ones out there.

Someone's indulged kid gets an R13 and quits...papa sells instrument for bupkahs on ebay since mama never told him how much was spent on it.

An experienced player buys the newest hot rod model and sells his Center Tone Selmer to finance a Prestige or a Signature

Ms. Spendsalot gets a new custom set of
Wurlitzers to go with the new set of Great Big Berthas (golf clubs, not personal enhancements)....and voila, the old set of Chadashes (try pluralizing that one!) gets offered up for sale.

try getting an old clarinet... old clarinets may be more seasoned or can just be in as good condition as new ones

Want a great horn at a reasonable price?

Get ahold of Dave Spiegelthal, a regular poster on this BBS.

He has a Couesnon Monopole (never heard of it, have you?) that has been set up by a professional player with a good ear.

It will be considerably LESS money than the E11 (et. al.) model you have considered. You will also play in tune (with a clarinet, no less!) which is something you may have difficulty doing with the E11 series.

Why am I not buying this instrument?

I already have a Monopole, and it's NOT for sale!

A more expensive alternative is the Ridneour TR147, which is my choice for playing in our community band. It is a composite (not wooden) that was built to spec by the designer of my hideously expensive leBlanc.

Available through Brook Mays.

Still not convinced?

If you insist on buying new, try Muncy Winds of Boone, NC.
Great stuff, great service, good stock, nice people and a cute doggie too!

If you want to buy a new horn, I would suggest buffet E11 , leblanc sonata or a Yamaha 450. These are well known intermediate wood instruments. You may try all these models or some more at your local music stores to see which one suites you.

Why do you want to buy a wood Clarinet? An answer to that question might lead to more appropriate suggestions.

John

I was in a similar situation (picking clarinet up after a lengthy hiatus and uncertain of how and where I would end up playing) and bought an E11 which has served me well for a very reasonable price (about $600 new). In considering your budget, put aside about $100 or so to buy a good mouthpiece and ligature. Those items are perhaps more important to a good sound and ease of playing than the difference between a new E11 and a used R13.
