 Zinner and Viotti mouthpieces
Author: Phur

I currently play Buffet RC prestige Clarinets. I have a Vandoren B45 mouthpiece which is fine but I am always interested in other alternatives. Has anyone tried Zinner or Viotti mouthpieces on French system instruments? I know they do make appropiate mothpieces for the French system, I am interested in what everone thinks of them?

Do a search on here for Viotto B3 mouthpieces, designed for french system. They are quite popular amoung students and professionals in Brisbane, sold through Brian Catchlove of the Queensland Orchestra. I also know a couple of people in Melbourne who use them, including myself. They are great mouthpieces, and quite consistant from one to the other. It's allowed me to achieve everything I've needed from it, but I am strongly considering changing to something a little more closed. The Viotto's are quite open. Apparently the B3 is designed with similar specs to the Vandoren B40. Let me know how you go with it.

if you visit Olivia Clarinet resources they have a chart describing the opening/length of the various facings Viotto makes- you can compare these with the Vandoren mouthpiece chart if you need a point of reference.
The Zinner french stype mouthpieces blanks (E type and A type, plus the A frame mouthpieces that should not be confused with the A type) are used by many many many mouthpiece refacers/manufacturers in the USA. Principal clarinet players in Australia, NZ, and USA (plus, i'm sure, many others) use mouthpieces made with Zinner blanks. You have undoubtedly heard these being played, even if yo didn't realise it at the time.
the Viotto mouthpieces have very consistent facings, but are not well finished by the standards of the best hand crafted mouthpieces available in the US, and haven't really caught on there as there are many other options. In Australia you have fewer options (without resorting to mail order and the problems associated with having mouthpieces on trial etc) and so Viotto mouthpieces could be the most pragmatic way to go- they are not bad by any means. I performed on one at Clarinetfest 03, and recieved many favourable comments on my tone from people assuming i was using one of my own mouthpieces (i had in fact sold my personal mouthpiece and hadn't had time to reface another- a bad habit of mine!)

Viotto N1 and N1 +2 are also available for French clars.
You have to use german cut reeds on it.
Pretty popular in Holland.

donald --

I apologize about the correction, but I didn't want anyone to get lost searching the web. It's Oliva without the second " i ".

Of course, the easiest way to find them is to click on the Mouthpieces & Barrels box on this page, as they are a sponsor of the site.

Thanks,

Todd W.

I just got a Concerto II and it came with the ED1 mouthpiece. The site has the mouthpiece listed as "hand crafted Zinner" and the actual mouthpiece has it in small letters as well. No other information is given. Does anyone know about the dimensions and design of this particular "Zinner"?

Bradley
