 Music-related sayings/quotes you've developed
Author: Meri
Date:   2003-10-02 21:10

I've noticed that many musicians have developed their own quotes or sayings, especially those of us who teach. For example, my former teacher's favorite saying to students was probably "If you are having a problem with your playing, it's usually air". Mine is one that I have found myself telling almost every student I teach: "There is a difference between being flat and sounding in tune, and being in tune but sounding flat. The first I can live with; the second I cannot."

What are your personal music sayings/quotes?

"I'm not flat, everyone else is sharp."

"When you guys play together, you sound like a band."

"Don't look at the conductor, it just encourages him."

"Did anyone notice those dynamic markings? TOO LOUD!"

"Two measures before rehersal mark A. Where's that?"

Ok...so I didn't develop it...but I canNOT resist repeating it...even though it's a little risque

A now-famous conductor conducted our orchestra at Oberlin my senior year. We were preparing for a performance of Nielsen's 5th symphony, and the strings were having trouble. He was obviously troubled by their lack of accuracy during the fugal bit, and had this to say to them about 2 weeks before the concert:

"I give you my blood, my sweat, my SEMEN! What more do you want from me!"

Of course the back half of the orchestra fell off of their chairs trying not to laugh out loud. We, of course, knew our parts pretty well cold...

Katrina
p.s. Hope this doesn't violate any rules, but let me know if there's a problem, Mark or Glenn...it really DID happen...

From the repairers perspective:-

"That horn's got more leaks than Watergate"

Musical quotes from the mouth of the celebrated British conductor Sir Thomas Beecham are usually worth a laugh. The following is cited in Mortimer,H. (1981) On Brass, Alpha Books, P92.

"The unfortunate (music) librarian incurred Beechams' mild wrath

'What's your name?'
'Ball, Sir Thomas.'
'Ball, eh? How very singular.'

Beecham at rehearsal:
'This is wrong, woodwinds!'
Second oboe: 'Sorry Sir Thomas, I was a bar out.'
'What's a bar amongst so many friends....but you will, I hope keep in touch with me from time to time throughout the symphony?'"

Sir Thomas Beecham (attributed) to a female cellist. "Madam, you've got an instrument, between your legs, capable of bring pleasure to many thousands ... why sit there and just scratch it?". He was disgusting, by all counts.

Observed Saturday 4/10 2003, Brewery Hotel Newcastle.

A noted local piano accordion player was asking the audience if they new what his instrument was called. The trombone player in the band replied with the retort "its a banjo!". Enough said.

At our jazz band rehearsal this week we had a vocalist to sing a new arrangement with us. The directior had been reminding everyone to be very quiet to enable the vocalist to be heard.

As he prepared to give the downbeat he said "You're already too loud!"
