Clarinets are transposing instruments. Scales for an Eb alto are the same as scales for a Bb soprano. That is, the note C4 is fingered T 123/XXX on both instruments; but a C scale played on the alto sounds as a concert Eb scale and a C scale played on the soprano sounds as a concert Bb scale.

To me, they are the same "scales" that you have with a Bb or Bass cl, they just sound a 4th/5th different. New question?? Don

Maybe he or she is trying to figure out what scale to play if asked in Band or orchestra to play a certain scale. All of the non-transposing instruments are ok, but if you play a transposing instrument you have to know how to do that.

Some do buy Vegemite by the pound here but they repackage it and call it "Bondo" and use it to repair dented and ripped auto fenders etc. Maybe that's why dogs chase cars?

Dear E Flat Alto Clarinet Player (assuming you have not fled in utter bewilderment given the unruly turn this thread has taken):
If Pam H. has correctly identified that nature of the help you are seeking, I suggest you do a Google search on "Circle of Fifths" to understand the relationship between your horn in the key of E flat and "concert" or C pitch instruments. If that is not what you are seeking...and you are willing to brave whatever other extraneous matter might be posted here...please feel free to ask for further assistance.

Well said, W H, I believe Pam has discovered "our" problem. Since Eb insts. are usually played in bands and associated groups, some basic advice may be helpful. Bands usually tune-up to a clarinet playing his/hers C, or an oboe's Bb, the same note for Eb insts is G. The Eb's key signature's "difference" from oboe/piano etc is 3 #'s, from clarinets and other Bb insts. is 1 #, that is, add the #'s or subtract from the b's. These rather elementary concepts of course lead into transposition, which we discuss here quite often. Others, please help a non-music student. Don
