A few of you may not be aware that Pomarico has created a special crystal mpc named "NIGUN" in honor of their 50th anniversary.
It's basic parameters are: 1.07mm (0.042) tip opening and 18mm facing. (For more information, see www.pomaricompieces.com. Go to clarinet, click on crystal, then scroll down to the bottom of the page.)
Weiner's Music didn't have the NIGUN but were planning to order some.
I next called WW & BW. The Pomarico website does not mention this, but they come in bright and mellow. I asked about the cost and was told $40.00 (yes, you read correctly...forty dollars!). I then asked why they were so inexpensive and was told they were a "specialty item" and only kept one of each on hand in case of an order. (I did order both of them for a trial period.) I was told they reorder according to need.
Personally, I don't think Pomarico would create an inferior mpc in honor of their 50th anniversary, so I'm expecting the quality to be consistent with the rest of their line.
For $40.00, this might be a pretty good deal.
Just thought you'd like to know.

Is there any indication that the glass composition is different from the regular Poms? Glass is generally quite a bit heavier than HR and plastics, and Nigun, if like the tableware/decorative Crystal glasses, might have more lead [in the mix] to further increase brilliance. Also, do they provide Nigun in alto and bass cl mps, would be interested!! Don

Dan... The WW/BW catalogue has always listed the Nigun mouthpiece at $79.95. I believe the sales rep may have quoted an incorrect price.
Perhaps the $40.00 he/she was thinking of is the actual discount from the retail price of $120.00? ...GBK

Hi everyone, I was told $40.00 was retail when I ordered them.
I just got off the phone and was assured again that, indeed, the retail price is $40.00 and I was charged 25% of that or $10.00 for each of the NIGUN mpcs for a 10 day trial.
After the salesperson told me again that $40.00 was the full retail price, I told him that a pile of orders might be coming his way because I was talking about WWandBW and the NIGUN on a clarinet BB.
Why the price reduction??? I really don't know....but, I wasn't going to let it get passed me.
I was told mine should arrive this Thursday. I'll let everyone know what I think of them.

You'll be pleased. Pomarico is a wonderful company and make the BEST mouthpieces. I have a couple of the Diamond Plus crystals. Both are exceptional and provide a great playing experience. I have not tried the NIGUN simply because I prefer a more open MPC, but I know the quality of their work and it is exceptional.

They advertise that Nigun is made for "the music of the soul"
I assumed that this meant jazz or blues .....But the dimensions that the poster stated sound like it has a more classical facing.

I believe that the Nigun (which means "prayer melody") mouthpiece was either inspired by, or made to the specifications of Giora Feidman ...GBK

Last year someone sent me a "Nigun" to reface --- it played pretty lousy right out of the box, I thought --- extremely stuffy --- not up to Pomarico's usual standards, IMHO. But we all know there's lots of mouthpiece-to-mouthpiece variation even between items having the same nominal facing/internal dimensions from the same manufacturer, so I wasn't shocked. If you do buy one, make sure you have return privileges.

I believe GBK is correct, the Nigun [TKS for translation!] appears to be a special Pom mp FACING. May "need" one in the future, am now considering a special order of an Alto cl Pom for my Sel-Paris non-basset horn. Will look at my old sop. glasses, still refacing, Dave? Don

Don, yes I am still refacing crystals, as long as my aerospace company refuses to recognize my true worth and pay me three times what I'm currently making..........just refaced a GG -1 for a fellow in Vegas, turned out quite well.......

To Those Who Go Mouthing the Crystal...
Umteen years ago
not really knowing what I was doing,
I got a GG +1 crystal mouthpiece, for a song,
in the Bronx, simply because it said Made in Italy.
At that time, I was mouthing a Selmer Crystal.
Of course, ya know, I mangaged to
break the Selmer Crystal thoroughly unsalvageably,
which made me go bananas for a couple of months.
So, no big deal... as New Yorkers would say.
In a span of a year or so,
I ended up owning not only a GG +1,
plus... a Vandoren, an O'Brien and a Premium Mitchell Lurie
these are all crystal, so fragile, so warm and sexy...
For reasons unkown to me, now,
I like my O'Brien the best, then,
the Premium Mitchell Lurie, followed by
Vandoren A2 (Heard of it, pal?)
And, alas, my GG +1 seems to be the
least favorite choice of mine at the moment...
But, wait a second,
that GG thing was manufactured almost 20 years ago,
you'd say, which makes me tremble
with a desire to try GG again so many years later.
I mean it... I want to give GG a real nice second chance.
Now, just tell me exactly who or what store I should call,
and say what, to try and get a Nigun?
(Sounds like "Shogun," doesn't it?)
A transaction to return the goods? A 10 days trial?
How many of them is costomary for me to try?
Or, is "refacing" my good old
a-little-too-much-open
and yet kinda funky GG +1 still worthwhile?

The Vandoren crystals (which are no longer produced) were for Bb clarinet, Eb clarinet and Bass clarinet.
The Bb mouthpieces were designated A1, A2 or A3.
The A1 had a tip opening of 1.10mm and a facing length of 18mm.
The A2 had a tip opening of 1.20mm and a facing length of 17mm.
The A3 had a tip opening of 1.30mm and a facing length of 18mm.
I have a very fine pair of Vandoren crystals which were selected from more than 20 samples. I presently use them (along with a Kaspar and a Borbeck) as my primary mouthpieces...GBK
