 ID-ing an R13

How can a Buffet R 13 be identified as such? Other than the Buffet Crampon logo and serial number are there any other indictors?

Not really - basically, no other identification is required.

The only real complication comes with the early R13s - no one is positive when the actual switchover came, and whether it was an abrupt or gradual change re. serial numbers.

Some newer R13's will have a barrel with that designation. However, barrels can be switched around on clarinets, so the serial number is still the place to look.

The introduction of the R-13 was "messy," with a number of prototypes being sold in the 1954-1955 period. The best information I've found is that serial # 48526 (1954) is pre-R-13, and 48830 (1955) is R-13. For more, including a description of changes in keywork, see http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=110046&t=110026> .

Best regards.

Not only is the serial number important, but you do need to make sure the clarinet was NOT made in Germany. The same serial number can show up on the R13 and the E11's, causing a bit of confusion. The famous Buffet logo shows up on both of the keyed sections on the R13, which is not the case for E11's.
