Hi all -
I'm considering buying either a Selmer Signet Special or a Selmer Soloist ... can anyone tell me if one model is "better" (I understand this is subjective!) than the other, generally please? I've trawled the web but can't find this info anywhere!
thanks
Helen

I believe the Soloist was their top Signet model. I played one about a month ago - and it was a truly remarkable player. About the only thing I saw that separated it from a pro clarinet was the finish on the wood. The wood grain on the Soloist was covered over by a tinted finish that obscured the grain. But it played great. I did not check intonation however - just the feel and the sound.

I play a Signet Special (my parents bought it for me brand new in 1955).
I have also played a borrowed Soloist. To the best of my knowledge, the Soloist is the "better" instrument. The differences in playing characteristics seem to be neglegible, but the Soloist is reputed to have hand selected wood and better key plating. I believe that is the difference, but this is not from any "official" source. In the used market, the Soloist brings a higher price.
Both are cosidered intermediate clarinets.
