Ok, I have a sony minidisc player, but it only has a line input. I believe I need some kind of preamp or amp to boost my mic levels to line level.
Any suggestions? cheap is good and good is good, but good and cheap is prefered.

Hmmm....I have a Sony mic specific for my MD player/recorder. It was only $100 about 4 years ago. I'd check with the place where you got it to see what they'd recommend, then try to find the same thing cheaper...

ginny, I think you are absolutely correct. If you try to record using a mic (in the line input) like the suggested ECM MS907, you will get a very quiet recording. I have a friend who is experiencing this with his Sony MZ-N505.
You need a mic preamp, but I don't know enough about them to recommend one.
I believe that phantom power is usually 12 to 48 volts supplied by a mixer or mic preamp to the mic. The power is applied to the same wires that carry the audio signal. Condenser mics need power.

You don't want a "phantom" power supply. That supplies power to a condenser microphone that doesn't have its own built-in power supply. You need a mic. preamplifier.
I looked for one at Radio Shack several years ago, but all they had was an editing console, whch is more (and more expensive) than I needed. Eventually, I found one made by Shure, for about $80.
The problem is that very few people do live recording. Almost all recording is from another CD, or other line level source.
I suggest that you ask this question on the Klarinet board, where Ben Maas, a professional recording engineer, is a regular.

Phantom power is used for condensor mikes or DI's not recording line inputs you might fry the player. Likewise dont use phantom power on omni directional stick mikes because whoever touches one will end up with a new hairdo.

Check sam ash, guitar center, or any other number of "pro-sumer" recording supply outlets and they have skads of cheap mic pres. If you have a typical consumer mic for use with portables, it is probably an electret condensor, so it is powered internally and doesn't require phantom power, but does need a preamp to step it up to line level.
All that being said, it might be simpler and cheaper to find a MD recorder with a mic input. Fewer toys to hassle with and the out-of-pocket is likely to be less.
Apropos one of the other threads, anyone looking for a really good practice mic and willing to spend a few bucks should check out the Musician's Ear ("http://www.performancerecordings.com/ear.html"). Bit strange looking (flat - so it drops into an instrument case), but the word is it is very effective. Has a line-level output so you don't need a mic pre to use it with a standard or portable deck.

I picked up mics and a preamp from "The Sound Professionals" on the internet. I am happy with them and use them with my Archos recorder.
The preamp about $90.

I have the same problem with my minidisc. Even recording at the highest level isn't really good enough!
I also have an 8-line mixer (Beringer MX802A ???) which has a Phantom switch, I always wondered what it was for!
I can use the mixer as a pre-amp, but it's not very portable, and even if I did take it somewhere to make a recording, I'd be worried everyone would think I'm a complete wanker setting up this huge mixer with a tiny MD recorder!
