 Recital Series (Selmer) barrel length
Author: CPW

I recently played on a Selmer Recital Bb clar.
The nominal barrel for this instrument is 64.5mm
The instrument was consistenly 10cents sharp on all notes....then I noticed that the barrel--which is marked 645--actually measured 60.3mm!!!
It doesnt look like it was cut down....so I wonder if they are using a different schema...or is something funny here???
Comments....
Anyone, anyone?

Mine came with two barrels: one @ 62.5 mm and one @ 64.5 mm. I play the short one and don't have a tuning problem.

Mystery solved!!!

I looked at a close-up of the instrument on the Selmer website and compared the shape of the barrel with the one on the instrument that I was using....the top of the barrel has indeed been truncated, as evidenced by an indentation between the top outer wood portion and the upper silver ring.
So it was cut down, probably by an owner who played in frigid conditions or with a group that tuned to A=443/444.

Now...where can one get a regular length barrel????

New barrels can be very costly, but many are available. How about using some tuning rings, perhaps having a good machinist make an aluminum or plastic one to "your" thickness needed. Don

if you need tuning rings that will be pretty much permanent, then you can install them in the mouthpiece socket... also, one possible source of ring for this socket can be to cut a slice off the tenon of an old "junker" mouthpiece. If it's a little too small, then "coat" the outside of the ring with scotch tape until it fits snugly.

It should be fairly easy to order a replacement barrel for a recital through a Selmer Paris dealer. They will make them up for all sorts of models, I have seen a couple of replacement 10G barrels made up in the past few weeks so Recital barrels shouldn't be a problem.

Tuning rings helped, but this barrel is **seriously** cut down...mustve tuned to 400044(j/k)
A call to a noted dealer solved the problem...this dealer (slightly south of the Mason Dixon line) handles Selmer a lot.
thanks to all who answered.
