 Von Weber Concerto in Eb
Author: John Noecker

Hello, everyone... I am going to be recording the 1st movement of von Weber's Clarinet Concerto (in Eb) for a Young Artists Competition (concerto competition) held in my area. My question is, when playing it, I tend to, "run out of steam" by the end.. the last page especially begins to get a little sloppy... Not usually the first time through, but for recording purposes I usually end up playing it at least 2-3 times to get a good run through, and by the 3rd time especially, I find it very difficult to make it to the end. Could anyone offer advice that might make it easier, or perhaps advice on a place where a cut could be made so that if I DO mess it up, I wouldn't have to start over again? Thanks very much. Also, any general suggestions for the Concerto or just recorded competitions like this would be appreciated

John

Endurance is what you want. Take a short break after going through it. Doing the piece you are, you must be a capable player. The stamina to do it three times will come but not in a couple days. Take 5 or 10 munite breaks after each playing. A glass of water. If it's tough now, it will get easier. Good luck, John. Go for it.

You may want to think about doing some aerobic exercises or taking up running to increase your capacity and control. I know that many young players are turning to these measures to feel and look better and as a welcome byproduct, they have much more resistance to "playing fatigue". If an old codger like me can benefit, anyone can. Aerobic exercises reach parts that scales and studies just can't get to. Good luck for the recording.

Thanks for your help, everyone.. I recorded this last week and sent it out.. I made it all the way through without trouble (well, not by my own causing). Had to do it twice because people can't read "Don't Enter, Recording" signs. The recording quality wasn't the best because it's just an audio tape and the recorder wasn't exactly high-tech, but like I said, I think it went very well.. I will let you all know the outcome of the contest when I find out (should be about a week or so) Thanks much for the help!

John
