Hi Guys,

Could anyone explain any of the markings and signs in this piece? There are several I have never seen.

Thanks,
Rob

Some of them are explained at http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=51878&t=51849.

Also, go to the Klarinet list search page, http://www.woodwind.org/Databases/LogsIndex/index.html and search on berio lied for a couple of pages of links.

You should also post a query on the Klarinet list, giving the particular signs that are unfamiliar. Tony Pay has played a lot of Berio, and he is probably the best source of help.

Best regards.

Luciano Berio was a close friend of mine and has recently passed away.
He was a dear man who wrote great music for many of us.
While I played with the Berio Ensemble in NYC, on US & Europe tours, and at the Spoleto Festival, he made many famous quotable comments.
With regard to multiphonics:
He was very influenced by the then brand new "Bartolozzi(sp.)" book on woodwind fingerings for multiphonics and other effects. It was all very new and untried territory at the time.
Luciano would often ask us if an effect was possible, as he was working on a new piece. We offered many suggestions and tried to help him invent a "new language." Berio never lied musically.

Yes, I have to agree, L. Berio was one of the greatest composers of our time, had a vast imagination and pushed music and composition to a new level. I always admired his sense of completeness in a piece, the demandment that you have to have a distinct and clear idea of what a composition as a whole has to sound like, before one could start and write down the differentiations of each voice. His death means a terrible loss to me.
