 new barrel

Can anyone recommend a replacement barrel for a Buffet R -13? I've been using this horn for many years but the barrel met an untimely death in an accident (whole other story). I used my A clar barrel for a while but that flattened the pitch way too much. Switched to a cheap plastic "tuning" barrel but I don't like what it does to the sound. Other barrels from my Bb Selmers don't sound right either. So, it's time to break down and go for a good barrel, but which one and how much is it expected to be? Suggestions? I'm in N. England and could go to Rayburns or Arfins, but I know their bost expensive. - Thanks - TD

I've tried a number of different barrels on my R13s and, surprisingly, aside from direct Buffet replacements a 66mm Pyne (plastic) seems to work the best. A Chadash and a Moennig don't seem to show any significant improvement. Maybe it's me. Go figure.

Clark Fobes makes great barrels. The Moennig and Chadaxh barrels are very good. Try a number of Moennigs, they can vary quite a bit. You can also try those made by Walter Grabner. Clark and Walter are both sponsors of this site. Morrie Backun has been getting a lot of attention lately for his work. Good Luck

Try a replacement Buffet.

"I used my A clar barrel for a while but that flattened the pitch way too much."

Isn't the A clarinet barrel actually shorter than the B-flat?

Yes stock A barrel is shorter, but the inside dimensions are also different.

You will find a lot of variation in the Buffet standard & Moennig barrels: play on a bunch of them to find one you like.

I have gravitated to standard length stock Buffet barrels (Bb & A). For short barrels, a Buffet 63mm on Bb, and a Robert Scott (Lansing, MI) short barrel on A. (The accordion player I work with is A=443.)

I also have a couple of DEG's, 12 years old or more. They helped bring throat pitches down, but I finally got a new clarinet and this eliminated the need for them.

If the departed barrel was a standard 66mm (stock for B-flat) barrel,
try the Chadash or Moening taper versions 1mm shorter.

I've actually been doing a study on different barrels for a college class, and my "barrel of the week" is one of those DEG barrels with the ribs. It is constructed supprisingly out of metal entirely! I've found it to give my sound a bit more resonance however you would have to deal with all the jokes from your collegues about your strange contraption!

Hi,

So does it mean that normal buffet stock barrels will tune sharper than a chadash barrel of the same length?

a 65mm stock buffet has around the same overall tuning as a 64mm chadash?

Maybe!! My experience is that, like many things, you have to play it...and not just for a few minutes or even hours.....to determine if it suits your needs.

I've just had Walter Grabner make me a beautiful cocobolo wood barrel. Along with his mouthpiece this produces a lovely warm rounded sound. A more dense and compact tone is evident with the barrel maybe a little more resistant too.
