 Noblet - What's the deal?

Ok, so what's the deal with Noblet?

I know that they are usually considered a student, or slightly above student model instrument. But some people consider the older "diamond" series of Noblets to be near professional. Were the old ones better than the new ones? Does the diamond actually mean anything important?

Yes, the older ones are definitely of better quality. I have a 1966 Noblet that was recently restored after sitting in a friend's closet for 36 years. It's sound is absolutely fantasic -- dark and very rich.

Speaking only of Noblet bass clarinets (with which I'm much more familiar than with their sopranos), regardless of vintage they are usually just average players --- nothing I'd go out of my way to purchase.

I generally agree with Dave. My spprano Eb Nob is very good, the Nob and LeBlanc bass cl's I've had were only mediocre as compared to my 70's Selmer-Paris. The LeB did have a rt hand fork fingering as the alternate Ab/Eb, unusual, but very good !! Possibly I didn't work on them enough, like I have on the Sel, but even the LL LeB had only a single register key structure, and needed the double IMHO. Prob. their low C model did have the DRK! I did try out a well-"tweaked" LeB at Wichita Band, quite good, still needed the DRK!. My "Stubbins"-Noblet, about 1960-70 is a good inst also, again not as good as my best Selmer, a CT. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don
