Is the Mendelssohn Concertpiece for 2 clarinets #1 and #2 originally written for orchestra accompaniment, or the piano? Thanks.

wan,
it is just
an arrangement
the trick of our contemporary
opulence
the original piece
as I understand it
was a trio
with clarinet
piano and with bassethorn
just a threesome

The initial orchestration of Op.113 was done by Mendelssohn, and the orchestration of Op.114 was by Baermann. Both were completed in 1833. ..GBK

Just for the record.
These pieces should never in any serious sircumstances be performed with two clarinets, but as it says in the original, with Clarinet and Basset Horn.

Oh gee, I wouldn't consider the Concertpieces exactly on a par with a Mahler Symphony (nothing really is anyway). Every time I play #2 and we're at that little piano interlude opening the final gallop section, I want to grab a damsel and tie her to a set of railroad tracks! To me they're more like "pieces of popcorn" to have fun and spread musical joy. I do agree, BOTH works should really be accorded due respect and performed with F basset and not 2 B-flats. Actually, I thought they were originally written for "cello (hence the basset) and piano" but I guess I am mistaken. v/r Ken
