Be aware that there has always been speculation that K297b (oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon) is an arrangement of Mozart's originally conceived work which was for flute, oboe, horn and bassoon.
All that has ever been found is a copyist's manuscript of what we presently label as K297b. No autograph exists.
However, certainly no reason not to enjoy the beauty of the piece...GBK

It's a great piece of music.
I played it a number of years ago and had a blast.

Although the history of the work is uncertain, the clarient writing is generally very clarinet-suitable (particulalry see the last movement for this). But the key part is the slow movement, and for a quite early numbering it is an absolute beauty. If you only do one part, do the slow movement.

Yes, the adagio is a Beauty! I also like the give and take among the instruments in the third movement. It's fun to play and nice for listening.

This is sublime music ... I've had the good fortune to play in a concert where both Sinfina Concertantes were on the menu. A truely marvellous experience.

GBK ... Mozart was "famous" for his dislike of the flute (bearing in mind the "classical flute" was a touchy beast), wonder if this is why he (very prudently) changed the orchestration.
Actually, GBK, I'm trying to find some "actual" quotes (letters of Mozart) where he states, categorically that he thought the flute sucked. I've got a lovely volume of his letters (obviously in translation) and I've read them all, very harrowing, joyful and funny ... couldn't find a flute anecdote.

That one might backfire on you, Diz, me old china. You may end up finding references to some good-natured scrawls Mozart scribbled to Stadler on his copy of K 622. Apparently they make light-hearted comparison between Stadler's clarinet playing and various parts of the human anatomy.

Diz...The actual Mozart letter you are looking for is the one he wrote to his father on February 14, 1778. He says, in part (although translations vary a bit) concerning the commission from De Jean for "three concertos and a couple of quartets" and why he had not yet finished them:
"... It is not surprising that I have not been able to finish them, for I never have a single quiet hour here. I can compose only at night, so that I can't get up early as well. Besides, one is not always in the mood for working. I could, to be sure, scribble off things the whole day long, but a composition of this kind goes out into the world, and naturally I do not want to have cause to be ashamed of my name on the title page. Moreover, you know that I become quite powerless whenever I am obliged to write for an instrument which I cannot bear..."
It is important not to read too much into that quote, because as we know, the flute quartets and flute concerti (among other works) are most beautiful and show little sign of contempt.
Most people have concluded that Mozart's outburst was caused by him not getting paid his full half- commission to begin the pieces, the constant time pressure exacerbated by his father's nagging letters and most of all the inability of an opportunity to write a new opera. Thus, he made a scapegoat of the thing closest at hand - the flute...GBK

Diz... I'll pass on the vegemite, but as I do not have your most current (or any) email address, write me off-line as I need to ask you a music related (non clarinet) question. Thanks ...GBK
