Ferree's makes a whole spring removing plier for needle springs. Flat springs can be taken off with a jeweler screwdriver. Be careful not to lose the little screws. Special tools are required for broken springs. The best tool is not available to general public. I suggest if there is a broken needle spring that the instrument be taken to a repair shop. There isn't much cost involved in replacing a spring.

Whole spring removal pliers, broken spring removal pliers, a lead block, pointed punches, small ball pein hammers, penetrating oil, pliers for removing posts etc. for needle springs. You are also best to get some spring setting pliers for replacing springs as well as a few sets of pin bending pliers, also you will need a small anvil and a larger ball pein hammer to flatted the end, some repairers also use heat to help with this process. A good pair of side cutters is also essential to cut them to length. Spring broaches are used to enlarge the spring hole if necessary.

For leaf springs you will encounter screws, cold rivets and soldering. To remove the screws a jewellers screwdriver, some tweezers and small hand vise to hold the keys. For cold rivets you need to use your imagination, for soldered leaf springs you need a de-soldering pump. You will also need some smooth jawed flat, and round pliers to shape the leaves when replacing the springs.

Spring removal is a job for an expert with the right tools. It is no major problem for somebody experienced and you would be surprised how quickly we can change springs. If you try to do it yourself make sure you take it slowly and have a good repairers phone number handy. The cost of the tools far outweighs any saving when dealing with springs.
