 mouthpieces

I was wondering what type of mouthpiece is good for me. I realize everyone will say something different but I'm just getting ideas right now. Anyways, I play on a Yamaha student, and regular vandoren strength 3 reeds. Hopefully I will be getting a buffet R13 in the near future.

Very big question and I ma a little surprised that there hasn't been a million responses. I will make a couple of suggestions and maybe that will provoke some response. I personally use Selmer and have just done a trial on a Yamaha custom. My Selmer preference is for the C85 120, the Yamaha I tried was a 6CM which was quite good but I found the volume range limited. Vandoren are also popular but not my cup of tea, I also own a Pomarico and a couple of Zinners and one Vandoren as well as a poly crystal. I have used various C85's for 25 years and always return to them. There are hundreds of brands out there each with their supporters and detractors so there is no right answer to this question. Whatever you do don't become a mouthpiece collector, or ligatures for that matter, it is an expensive and fruitless pursuit. I temporarily change from the Selmer periodically, say once every couple of years, for a month or two because I go a bit stale, not for any other reason. Also bear in mind there is no magic mouthpiece that will do everything for you as some seem to believe.

Yeah that seems to cover just about everything. Vandoren is the mainstream mouthpiece producer that every store has, and it's easiest to find, so in case you can't find others, Vandoren would do just fine. Also, you should test out different mouthpieces with different specs. If you know what type of mouthpiece, closed or open, you have now and you're somewhat happy with it, then you might just test different mouthpieces of just closed or just open. However, it's still a good idea to try different mouthpieces, and if you have different brands/models of reeds, bring them all along! Many mouthpieces play better only with certain reeds.

The Vandoren M30 13's have gains huge popularity since it came out last year. I recommend you try them. I swore to myself I would never play a vandoren seeing as how I never liked them, now I can't see myself playing anything else but the Vandoren M30.

There's no substitute for play testing.

For the same reason you try on shoes, you must play through a selection of mouthpieces to find the best fit.

If your current mouthpiece is clean, gives a decent sound and is comfortable to play, stay with it until AFTER you purchase your new horn.

Don't change too many things at once with your gear.

Since u are using size 3 reeds, maybe you can try mouthpieces for that size first... like Morgan RM15, Vandoren B40 etc....

The best would probably bo to wait untill after youi get your R13 and then go and try out a bunch of mouthpieces and go from there since different mouthpieces play different for each person. This way you can pick whats best for you and you can pick what performas the way you want it to.

i'm not an expert by any means, but something does occur to me. if you wait on the mouthpiece till you get the r13, you can compare the new mouth piece to your current to have a better ideawhat your looking for! you'll be able to see that one is more open/closed and how that affects your playing. also, you may fall in love with your curent mpc all over again on the r13! at any rate, if you bought a mpc first you may like it on your current setup, but hate it on your r13!it's simple math, but i wouldn't buy a car stereo if i were planning to also trade cars soon!
thanx

if you can't be good... be good at it!
