while playing the clarinet i know that the lower lip is supposed to be rolled over the bottom teeth to make a "cousin" for the reed. ive never really thought about it much but im not sure what im supposed to do with the lower lip while playing alto sax or any sax for that matter. is it supposed to be rolled over the teeth like clarinet or is it something completely different? i started to think about this because my teeth started to be pushed into my lower lip and the next morning when i woke up they hurt like crazy. any help would be much appriciated.

Yes, I found that my teeth used to ache when I first started saxophone too. The advice I was given was to squeeze in with the sides of your mouth rather than your lips. Also the saxophone mouthpiece is bigger than the clarinet mouthpiece so that might have something to do with it. I'm sure someone else will be able to give you better advice or information but I thought you'd like to know that you're not the only one who's had this problem.

krawfish3x ... Aside from taking a lesson or two with a saxophone instructor and seeing first hand what the saxophone embouchure should look like, you could purchase one of a number of good saxophone instructional books.
"The Art of Saxophone Playing" (Larry Teal) is one of the best and will give you reams of information on all aspects of saxophone playing.
Trying to learn the saxophone embouchure over the internet via a bulletin board is the worst way to proceed...GBK

Well said, Glenn, for me, the larger the horn [cl or sax, or dblreed-family for that matter] the looser/lesser-lip embouchure needed/desireable. I still end playing alto sax with more lip tooth "impressions" than when on bass cl. Usually able to rest-up, tho. Don

To me, the embouchure is almost the same with the sax needing a rounder opening. Try saying "cheerios" to form the sax embouchure.

Sounds a little like you are trying to play the sax with an angled embouchure like the clarinet. The mouthpiece should go straight in not upwards like the clarinet consequently the lower jaw is more forward but the lip position, apart from being proportionately more relaxed, is not overly different. The jaw pivots more in saxophone playing. The saxophone is not as easy as most clarinettists think, wait until you try tenor sax.
