 Reed observations

I used to play with Vandoren V12 3.5s, and I recently switched to regular Vandoren 4s. I noticed that once I find a really good reed, I have to fiddle with the ligature to get the sound I like. Is this normal?

I guess I was used to the long shank on the V12, but it seems I have to move my liggy closer to the tip of the mouthpiece to get a better sound. (I use a Bay Medium lig)

And sometimes it plays better if the reed is crooked! haha

Anyone else notice this?

Yeah, I wondered why you kept fussin' with your ligature all the time. I figured you were just nervous that people were starin' at you :)

Just as a point of reference, Vandoren Traditional (blue box) #4 reeds are significantly harder than V12 #3.5 reeds. In fact, the Vandoren Traditional #4 is roughly equivalent to the V12 #4.5.

Aside from the thicker blank of the V12, the scrape of the Traditional and V12 are very different. Most importantly, the Traditional reed has a shorter vibration zone. This could account for the different placement of your ligature when using these reeds...GBK

If the reed plays better "crooked" it probably needs to be balanced (One side is harder than the other).

Does clipping and trimming the reeds affect V12 and traditional reeds differently?

If you pull your ligature down towards your belly button, your sound is more open... In other words, the higher your ligature is vertically, the buzzier your sound is. Also, it is harder to blow in. Try it, contragirl...

I don't fuss with my ligature a lot once I have it on, but I do find myself nudging my reed one way or another as I warm up. I guess that means I play with crooked reeds too!

GBK's comment makes sense. Changing reeds could affect ligature placement, as you seem to have found.

GBK:"Aside from the thicker blank of the V12, the scrape of the Traditional and V12 are very different. Most importantly, the Traditional reed has a shorter vibration zone."
By "scrape" do you mean it reacts to scraping differently? and...How does one locate the vibration zone of a reed? bob

BobD ... I am refering to the factory scrape of the two different reeds. The vibration zone of the reed begins at the curved scrape (not the initial straight file cut). As I previously stated, the V12 scrape starts further back (towards the heel of the reed), thus there is a longer vibration zone.

Additionally, the shape of the curved scrape is different on the two models of reed. The Traditional reed has a more pronounced U shaped scrape than the flatter U shaped scrape of the V12 ...GBK
