Some time ago, I was sitting in on a masterclass about contemporary clarinet literature. The presenter told us of a piece in which the clarinetist played, removed the bell, played, removed the lower joint, etc. until all that was left was a squeaking mouthpiece! Neither the presenter or anyone else seems to know the exact title of the piece or the composer. If any of you have played or watched this piece be performed please let me know the title, composer, and where you think I can acquire it, as I think this would be a fun closing piece to my Senior Recital.

You must be talking about "Immer Kleiner" by Adolf Schreiner. I've played it with band accompaniment. My copy is by Ludwig Music, dated 1970. It's not exactly what I would call "contemporary clarinet literature", though, if that's what you're looking for. It's subtitled "A Humorous Fantasy", and is very much a novelty piece, with a musical style more like old-fashioned cornet solos. I was going to do it with piano last year for a faculty recital on April Fool's Day, but, alas, the performance was cancelled.

My son played a piece like this in his solo and ensemble concert last year. It was called the Incredible Shrinking Clarinet. I can check at home for the composer if you're interested. It was just clarinet and piano, and quite short, and suitable for a player with only a few years of experience. So, it may be a bit easy for a senior recital.
If you've ever sat through an 8th grade solo and ensemble concert, you may know they can be pretty tedious at times. The shrinking clarinet piece garnered the most applause and laughter, and was definitely remembered. It does have to be pulled off by someone with some stage presence, and required a really good piano player.

I've played Immer Kleiner at a whole lot of talent shows and it's always a big hit. It's best with the piano accompaniment, though it can be difficult to get in tune.
You can probably get it from Luyben Music http://www.luybenmusic.com
I believe the effect is best when you bring your case out and put the parts of the clarinet in it as you go.

The one my son played was by Stephen L. Lawrence, and entitled "The Incredible Shrinking Clarinet" . The front of the music says it is Grade 3 (whatever that means). We got it at a local music store in their sale bin, so iI don't know whether it's out of print.
