Did you hear the report of this on NPR? They used some squeeky clarinet to demonstrate a low (concert) B flat.

Today, in a related story Stairway to Heaven was reportedly heard coming from the Alpha Centauri region ...GBK

Sound in space? Am I missing something here?

What "set up" does it use?
Please give tip openning in lightyears.
Imagine the reeds!!!
How long would it take for a certain traditionally tardy west coast mouthpiece mayven to make it a mouthpiece??

What. I am totally confused.
I don't remember where I herd it but I thought I would post it. I think it is possible. Not sure if its true.

Didn't South Park cover this some months ago?
PS - Astrophysics 101... vacuum is not a medium to propagate sound.
(No matter what George Lucas would put in his movies.)

Vacuum is not a medium to propagate sound? You don't follow politics very closely I guess.

That must be the "note" that I heard (felt) as that kids car, with its mega watt sound system, pulled up beside me on the street last night.
If I remember the artical correctly, the wave length of this Bb sound is ten million years from node to node. (thats the low down, folks!!)

?How many physicists do we have [loose] on our BB?? I presume we must be talking about an electromagnetic wave rather than a sonic, due to the near-vacuum of space! I seem to recall a math. relationship combining frequency and wave length.. For f= ?one cycle in 10mm years, it must be a long-long wave length [gamma?], from here to "way out there". HELP!! Don
Thanx, Mark, Don

No.
Space is not really a vacuum (though is is an incredibly good approximation of one in most cases!) This particluar case is a sound wave, propagating though a (rarefied) gas cloud.

Bravo!!!
As far as the # of physicists here.....Well I think a lot of us musical types are philosophical enough to read a lot of Science Fiction...the good kind that tackles deep issues...like God, the origins of the Universe, space-time, and oh yes, cute chicks in short outfits with laser stun guns.

CPW....You gave me an idea. Could the "deepest note in the universe" be God's last breath? After all, Creation must have been a truly exhausting experience.

<<Could the "deepest note in the universe" be God's last breath?>>
Naw...God has good chops and one helluva set of pipes
and......a Chedeville mpc refaced by Kaspar and worked on by Chris Hill and Johnston.......and he sells them on ebay when he needs to purchase another universe

Glad to hear that, CPW, I was afraid that HE, after creating us ETC, and watching us "mess around" with it, had just given up on us . TKS, Don

HE might be a SHE.....
What I said was that Gd cashes in on ebay and then builds ANOTHER universer......I didnt say HE improves this one. Although if Gd is a SHE, then certainly this universe would get periodic reupholstering.

Mark C - You have my OK to call quits on our "banter" as you see fit. I couldn't get the "space.com" site to read more about it, and attempt understanding, so one thing leads to another! Does She/He/It cover it, CPW? , great comments! Don

If this is true, then it's truly amazing!
What could have produced that sound?
