Buying a Bass Clarinet in the future
Author: Kimbo
Date:   1999-02-17 02:25

I'm saving up my money so I can get a Bass clarinet next year to play in my band 'cos im kinda getting bored of the alto clarinet and i also don't like the sound of it. And since i find bass clarinet easier and more enjoyable to play i thought i might go with it. Anyway i wanted to find out about how much a nice intermediate bass clarinet preferably wood would cost and if anyone is planing to sell if so please email me with any infor you have on one of them.
Thanx alot,
Kimbo

You might also consider a good old used pro horn. Until I got a new one, I was using a 40-45 year old LeBlanc which sounded nice. I have, in the past, seen identical ones offered on E-Bay.

For a good, inexpensive bass clarinet, I highly recommend the plastic Vito 7166, at about $900 new (mail order), or about $1000 retail from music stores. I've been playing amateur and semi-pro bass clarinet for 25 years, and now play on a Vito. Although it's considered a student-grade instrument, it really offers a lot of "bang for the buck", and I think for the type of playing you seem to be going to do, it might be plenty good enough. I believe a decent Vito (make sure you try a few) should play as well as a mid-grade wooden horn, but for half or one-third the cost.

I bought one last fall for about $250. I got it fixed up for about $250. And then I bought it a new case for about $100. So that's a good deal. It's value increaesed with all the work I did. Look for ones in pawn shopes or used ones and then fix them up. It's cheaper. BTW mine was a bundy and it's playing very well but I want a low C Selmer........woking on saving that much. BTW it's $6000.

Have a nice day.

Angel--

By shopping around at the mail order music stores or others on the net, you can get it for less than $5000. If you want a recommendation, e-mail me.

Well, Kimbo, bass clarinets aren't the easiest things to buy. I'd say chech out the Net about basses, for example on: www.wichitaband.com

That guys aren't sharks and their instruments are cool.

Good luck, keep me posted, if you find a bass.
