I need some information on the following composers and works
Rossini- Introduction, Theme and Variations
Spohr- Concerto #3
Martinu- Sonatine (I also need to know how to pronounce his name)
I am doing these pieces for an audition in just under 2 weeks, and they will be asking me stuff about the composers. I looked on the Internet for information, but that type of information is notoriously unreliable, and I can only find very general or completely irrelevant stuff.
Thank you

Rachel... There are two important research books which will usually answer most composer information questions:
New Groves Dictionary of Music and Musicians (or "Groves")
Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians
They should be found in the reference section of most libraries.
I would also make use of the reference librarian. They are there to help you and certainly will show you the resources that are available on site or through inter-library loan.
Did you also consider finding CD's with the above named compositions and reading the program notes? Find a few different performances and compare the written liner notes to get some contrasting thoughts...GBK

Martinu is a Czech/ Bohemian/ Moravian composer. The Sonatine has been transcribed for different instruments, originally I think it was for trumpet. You will be lucky to find any information on him. His first name is Bohuslav. I had the same problem and had to plead ignorance about any general knowledge. The correct pronounciation is something like Martinynew.

No... It was originally written for clarinet in 1956, while Martinu was teaching at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia.

What?? Even the most rudimentary search engine will take you to the Martinu Foundation, as well as several different biographical pages
Martinu was the leading Czech composer of the 20th century. Much has been written...GBK

Thanks for the link to the Martinu Foundation.. I haven't really looked at it yet, but it seems to be what I'm looking for. I had done a search on Google for Martinu before, but it didn't come up with that.

Does anyone have any tips on performing the Martinu Sonatine? (If I had a teacher, I would ask him/her, but I don't, so I can't). I think I know how it should be performed but the demisemiquaver passages are confusing me a little- I think I know what they mean by the marking "meno mosso, ad lib" but I have never come across it before so if someone could tell me exactly how to play it I would be grateful.
