Heyhey all:
I just wanted to say that i'm new to this forum/page, etc and I'm really glad i'm here! I started out playing B-flat and i'm now playing bass. I am really interested in playing contra bass, but i'm not sure. I wanted to know if anyone has any info on the contra and sub contra (or octo) bass. If you do please tell me!

Do a search on Contrabass Clarinet ... you'll find a lot of useful information (and a lot of crap, too), such is the life in the electronic world.
Look at the top of the screen you'll see a search button ... a very good feature that's easy to use.

But seriously, Emily.......perhaps for your first foray into the sub-bass clarinet world you could try the EEb contra-alto, although it's not that much lower in pitch than the bass ---- but they're readily available, relatively inexpensive, and very useful for reading bass clef/concert pitch parts such as string bass, tuba, bassoon/contra-bassoon. And big and low enough to be extra-fun!

Just to add to Dave's comment, there isn't much point in exploring any instrument below the Bb Contrabass - an extended one, which goes to low C like an extended Bass (most Leblanc "paperclips" you'll find) pretty much extends to the lower limit of human hearing (somewhere around 30 Hz).
There are some neat parts for the instrument, but lots of not so neat ones.

According to the chart at http://www.contrabass.com/pages/frequency.html , the lowest note on an extended BBb contra is concert Bb at 29.14 Hz. Although human hearing goes down to 16 Hz, I find that I can't distinguish the pitches of the bottom three notes on my contra (sounding C, B and Bb, written D, Db and C), even using the old-style wider mouthpiece and reed.
However, my Korg tuner can display the notes and tell the difference, and a correct contra pitch can make a big difference in the parts above it. However, this can be taken to absurd lengths. The fundamental frequency of the 64' organ pipe in Sydney is 8.18 Hz, and I can't imagine that the reinforcement, or lack thereof, would be affected if it were at 8.17 or 1.19. Still, it makes for some fun discussion, such as the one on the contrabass board about what happens when the wind blows over the top of the world's tallest chimney, which is about a quarter-mile closed tube. The consensus was that it would "sound" a D at 1.2 beats every 5 seconds.
