But in all fairness, SB, the Yammie is probably SO much shinier and prettier.....and best of all, everyone can pronounce and spell its brand name. That alone is worth $500-600 to me, how about thou?

DS and SB --

Lighten up a little you Monday morning grumpy bears; you're beginning to sound like the flip side of the Buffet Mafia.

Yes, sometimes new, shiny, and pretty are factors in the selection of a product, and who's to say that's not legitimate? Not every purchase has to be entirely logic-based -- or conform to your criteria.

Besides, I doubt that Silvite based his choice solely on the elements you mentioned, especially after he took the time to ask the bulletin board inhabitants for advice (as well as his tutor).

Silvite --

For comparative prices, you can check the Woodwind & Brasswind or IMS catalogs (you may have to call to get the price).

Aw, gee, Mom! It's not easy trying to get folks to think outside the box --- sometimes a bit of (well-intentioned) sarcasm can be effective. But on the other hand, it IS Monday and I AM grumpy........<more coffee, quick!>

Silvite,

In my opinion, how the horn plays is really the bottom line. If it has good intonation, good response & overall feel, and you're getting the quality of sound you want then you're all set. The other things -- such as physical appearance, brand name, market value, etc -- are secondary.

My alto is not bright & shinny nor is it new. It's a 74-year old Buescher! The market value for the horn is only so-so. Never the less, it's SOUND is the alto sound of my dreams. My heart beats faster every time I play it. Thus, I don't care about the fluff stuff or what anyone else thinks about it.

If you're happy with your Yamaha that's all that matters. Enjoy your horn!

ty for the feedback!
i can put it this way...
i had no problems getting the sound from the 4c + rico 2½ combo and the response is nice for low-high notes.

I have just now "tested" my IMPROVEMENT [?] in right hand access to low G, and on down, on my Selmer-Paris Alto cl, resulting from [my old standby] inverting the thumb rest , and am pleased that it is similar [now] to that on my Sel Bass cl. The "reach" to the rt hand E and Eb feels better. I suggest this if fingerings via small hands is "marginal". Don

Thanx, Mark, Don
