i am a music education major at University of Maryland studying with Loren Kitt, I am looking to transfer schools to a more musically intense environment. People always say that you have to find the right teacher except it is kind of hard to know from simply reading their biographies. (I would like to study education and performance eqally if possible I am looking for opinions on schools that have outstanding clarinet teachers and outstanding education departments. Any opinions are welcome.

Well, Indiana is reputed to be one of the finest music ed schools with a very strong clarinet section (Howard Klug, Eli Eban). U of Michigan would be another to look at (Fred Ormand, Deborah Chodacki).

FYI: I highly recommend Russell Dagon, at Northwestern University, Ill. Plus his excellant guidance, your not too far from Chicago and the great CSO (Combs, Smith, Yeh, etc.)

I have to admit I am a little biased, but NY often is considered to have one of, if not THE best overall education/teacher preparation programs in the country - In most subject areas. State University of NY has a few very reputable music schools - the Crane School at Potsdam State, and the Fredonia School of Music at Fredonia State. There are also quite a few private schools in NY - such as Ithaca - with excellent ed programs.

I too have heard and seen first hand wonderful things about Russ Dagon at Northwestern. He's great, and a great person- and player as well. I didn't go to school there, so I can't speak for the ed. dept.

good luck

North Texas State University & how about DePaul University.

I hear that both are QUITE intense. I take private lessons from a graduate of NTSU and she was a duyal major and is now a Professor of Clarinet and a Principal Chair in a Symphony. After meeting the two of the clarinet professors from NTSU I was quite impressed.

They say that taking a lesson from a prospective teacher is important.

Best of luck!

I inadvertently created a new major of sorts. NOT.

a _DUAL_ major is what I meant .... education & performance.

Again, good luck.
