Unless it means an octave lower. I know there's a way to abbreivaite octave up and octave down. I think (keyword THINK) 8ve is octave down. I jusw posted this so someone would hopefully explain ALL the 8__ markings and not just answer that question. Thanks.

8va - oktava
8vb - oktava bassa (lower)

"8va" is Italian - "al ottava."
"8ve" is French -"a l'octave."

Both mean play an octave higher.

I've never seen "8vb." Only only "8va basso," but I'm perfectly willing to believe "8vb" exists. piu58 -- where have you seen it?

"8va" is used to avoid writing a lot of ledger lines, and make it easier to read the passage. At least on the standard clarinet, there's no reason to use "8va basso," since everyone knows how to read down to low E, though I've seen it used for extended instruments to avoid going into bass clef.

Best regards.

In my Pocket Music Dict. there is a paragraph of interesting-to-read explanation of octave up/down. The essence I get is , if 8va is above the staff, it imeans up, if below staff [may have "bassa" attached], it means down. I would think that musical "sense" should also dictate. Don

As a pianist I have seen 8va basso and 8vb to indicate an octave lower than written and I have seen (incorrectly) 8va below notes trying to indicate an octave lower. It takes all kinds -- but ve adn va mean the same -- octave higher

why doesnt the composer just write the notes in the octave he/she wants it played?

Because at a certain point the number of ledger lines needed to indicate the note becomes unmanageable. It's very common to see 8va or 15va on piano music, less common on clarinet music.
